Company Background:   WCE is an international organization involved in the production and sales of industrial chemicals with operations in over 40 countries. The company is headquartered in London, Ontario. Annual sales exceed $..... and total assets are $... The Company’s mission is to…… The company was founded in 1909 by the first generation of the current majority shareholders. Currently the company is focused on the development of new products and services which will respond to the evolving environmental regulatory pressures and maintain our leadership position in the industry.    
Problem Statement:   WCE is considering pursuing joint marketing efforts across some of its divisions and product lines.  WCE operates each division autonomously and does not link activities through the corporate office.  WCE requires the completion of a study to evaluate the feasibility and profitability of pursuing joint marketing efforts across the services and chemicals divisions globally, but with an initial focus on North America and Western Europe.  The study must also offer recommendations on how to proceed and address the reorganization of the various sales forces and the use of new distribution systems.
What research and analysis is required: To complete this assignment, it is likely that the following activities must be undertaken:

  • Interviews of key figures within WCE (marketing and sales) and externally (customers, industry analysts, outside marketing and advertising firms)
  • Financial assessments of the various product lines and divisions and where the gains can be made
  • Simulation models to predict potential profitability outcomes
  • Industry research for the targeted industries (Yankee reports, I-Banking reports)
  • Scenario planning
What do you expect as the final deliverables from the ICP team? The final deliverables should be a report containing an analysis of the merits (or otherwise) of a joint marketing effort and recommendations on an implementation plan. Additionally, we would expect to receive as part of the final report:

  • An appropriate simulation model
  • All of the financial analysis and profitability assumptions
  • A summary of all interviews conducted – we will not expect a word-by-word account of the interviews, because they will be considered confidential
  • All industry research material that was used to form opinions and conclusions on the industry
  • A final presentation of the report to Executive Management of WCE
What resources and commitments will the company provide to the ICP Team to assist in completion of the project?  We will make the following resources available to the ICP Team to complete the project:

  • Funds to cover the costs of one trip to Toronto to visit the head of the services division (3 people)
  • Funds to cover the cost of one trip to Philadelphia to visit the head of the chemicals division (3 people)
  • Access to all financial documents (as recent as has possible)
  • Password access to the company intranet
  • Limited subscriptions to Yankee Reports, Legg Mason, and Morgan Stanley research reports
  • 1 hour to interview key members of the marketing and sales groups
  • Introductions to WCE’s advertising company
  • Open access to the Executive Vice-President – Sales for ongoing support and guidance as required by the Team.
