Mission:
To be a strong advocate for sound public
policy that will ensure a powerful future for
Canada by providing a forum for business, media,
students and academia to work with government
and actively participate in public policy issues
for the greater Canadian good.
History:
In 2001, veteran Toronto businessman and
active participant in the Canadian policy
landscape, Jack Lawrence, HBA ’56, donated a
gift of $3.7 million to the Richard Ivey School
of Business to fund a much-needed expansion. The
gift was used to build the Lawrence National
Centre for Policy and Management, an expansion
and addition on the current Ivey building on the
campus of The University of Western Ontario.
Throughout his career, Jack Lawrence was a
strong believer in Corporate Canada’s ability to
affect the direction of public policy. He was
vocal in expressing his view to government and
was an active member of the Canadian
Council of Chief Executives (CCCE) (formerly the
Business Council on National Issues) for many
years. His ambition was to see the Centre provide
the guiding spirit to help students, business
leaders, academia and public officials
understand, discuss and contribute to the
building of sound public policy ensuring a
powerful future for Canada in the global
environment.
Vision:
As the Lawrence National Centre for Policy
and Management moves forward, its vision is to
partner business strategy with fiscal policy,
taxation policy, competition policy,
international trade policy, environmental policy
and corporate governance. On top of this, the
Centre will strive to become the nationally
recognized institution for contributing to
Canada’s global competitiveness. The Centre will
do this through the guidance of a strong
advisory council composed of individuals who
have excelled in the partnering of business
strategy and public policy.
In 2004, Dianne Cunningham joined the Lawrence
National Centre for Policy and Management as
Director, bringing to Ivey over 30 years of
experience in education and government affairs,
most recently as Minister of Training, Colleges
and Universities and prior to that as Minister
of Intergovernmental Affairs, Minister with
Responsibility for Women’s Issues, Chair of the
Council of Ministers of Education – Canada and
Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding
of London North Centre (1988-2003).
As the Director of the Lawrence National Centre
for Policy and Management, Ms. Cunningham’s
extensive knowledge of both government and
education will strengthen Ivey’s continuing
leadership position as one of the world’s top
business schools and help build upon its
continuing efforts to further public policy
research.
