In February 2002, the federal government
launched its Innovation Strategy to move
Canada to the front ranks of the world’s
most innovative countries. Innovation
is the process through which knowledge
is applied to the development of new
products and services, and new economic
and social benefits are extracted from
such knowledge. Universities perform
31% of Canada’s research and development
and are key players in Canada’s
innovation system and are collaborating
with Canadian firms to develop new
technologies and new spin-off companies.
In 2007, Agriculture and Agri-food
Canada and its Agricultural Biorefinary
Innovation Program agreed to fund $8.7
million to the Agricultural Biorefinary
Innovation Network (ABIN), led by Dr.
Franco Berruti and his Institute for
Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative
Sources, which focuses on the conversion
of Agricultural crops, waste and other
biomass sources into bio-oil via fast
pyrolysis.
At our Making Green Energy Happen,
Policy and Priorities reception on
Sunday, April 26th, 2009, Dr.
Franco Berruti and his leading research
team provided our participants with a
stimulating show case of research
projects conducted at the University of
Western Ontario under the ABIN project.
Minister Donna Cansfield, our keynote
speaker, was especially interested in
learning about the state-of-the art
research in this area.
Please see below for the presentations
provided by 6 of the researchers of this
Innovation Network.
