Water Innovation Forum: A Competitive and Innovative Agriculture Sector

On January 23rd and 24th, 2011 a Water Innovation Forum was hosted by the Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, supported by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

The Forum focused on agriculture’s use of water and its connection to increased competitiveness and profitability for the sector, the location and distribution of water resources, economic opportunities and challenges related to water use and conservation, and current innovations in technology and sustainable water infrastructure.

The Forum brought together, by invitation only, eighty participants representing business, academia, government, non-governmental organizations and students to advise on challenges and opportunities facing the agricultural sector and strategies for developing and implementing effective policy frameworks. Participants had a meaningful dialogue on critical issues related to water use, agriculture and increasing our competitive advantage.

The final report outlines activities for industry, government and academia to consider in encouraging water innovation. The report will be distributed to key stakeholders in the agriculture sector.
