Meet our doctoral candidates who are currently doing research that is relevant to Ivey's Research Centre for Engaging Emerging Markets.


 Doctoral Candidates

Majid Eghbali-Zarch
Majid is a Ph.D. candidate in general management, specializing in strategy and international business. Before pursuing an academic career, he had 10 years of experience as an entrepreneur and executive of an engineering company, a university lecturer, and a construction manager. Majid holds an undergraduate and a Master degree in engineering, as well an MBA from Sharif University in Iran. His research interests are focused on international joint ventures and alliances as well as learning and knowledge transfer in international context. He is a fan of economic theories in business, especially transaction cost economics theory.

Rida Elias
Rida is a Ph.D. candidate in general management, specializing in strategy. Before pursuing an academic career, Rida had 12 years of experience as a management consultant in the Middle East area and a university lecturer at several universities in Lebanon. Rida holds an undergraduate and a Master degree in Business from the American University of Beirut. Her research interests are focused on intra and inter organization knowledge transfer.

Bassam Farah
Bassam is a Ph.D. candidate in general management, specializing in strategy and international business. His research interests are in international strategy and global leadership. Most of his previous research focused on leadership. He holds a Master's and a Ph.D. in psychology from the Lebanese University and an MBA from the American University of Beirut.

Vanessa C. Hasse

Vanessa is a Ph.D. student in general management, specializing in strategy and international business. Prior to pursuing an academic career, she gained experience in German banking and management consulting firms. She holds a Master of Arts in International Business from the University of Florida and her primary research interests include the international service industry, foreign direct investment in the context of emerging markets as well as social intrapreneurship.

Yanfei (Clara) Hu
Clara is a Ph.D. candidate in general management. She is interested in developing a deep understanding of how corporations manage uncertainty. Clara graduated from Ivey's MBA program in 2004, and had worked in the business media and education sectors before joining the Ivey PhD program.
 

David Maslach
David is a Ph.D. candidate in general management, specializing in technical entrepreneurship. He is broadly interested in economic sociology and applied econometrics. His research investigates how organizations learn from failure and how rivals exploit uncertainty surrounding failure, especially in international markets.

Yves Plourde
Yves is a Ph.D. candidate in general management, specializing in international management and strategy. He holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in International Management from HEC Montréal. His primary research interests include headquarters-subsidiary relationships, the management of capabilities within the MNE, and strategic alliances involving MNEs and SMEs.

Michael Roberts
Michael is a Ph.D. candidate in general management.  His research is in the area of leadership; with a particular interest in leading change in multinational organizations. Michael is a University of Western Ontario graduate, and has a Master's degree in education from the University of Toronto.  Michael taught at the KAIST Graduate School of Management in Seoul, Korea before joining Ivey. He hopes his research will have a direct positive impact on people in organizations; making their work lives more productive, meaningful, and fulfilling.

Michael Sartor
Michael is a Ph.D. candidate in strategic management specializing in international management and strategy. He received his M.B.A. from the Ivey School of Business and his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University in Toronto, Canada. He is interested in a wide range of strategic and managerial phenomena and issues pertaining to foreign direct investment in emerging markets, including among others, the impact of institutions on the decision-making processes of MNEs, the corporate governance of MNEs, as well as expatriate management, innovation management and the impact of corruption on foreign investment behaviour. His research is characterized by a strong bent towards risk management strategies.

Francis Sun
Francis Sun is a Ph.D. candidate in general management. Prior to pursuing an academic career, Francis was an executive officer at China Unicom. His current research is focusing on comparative institutional studies between market economies and emerging markets, business practices in East Asia, and business strategy in emerging markets.

Min (Megan) Zhang
Megan is a Ph.D. candidate in general management.  Her research interests include intropreneurship and strategic management in MNEs, especially their business models’ for  innovation in emerging markets. Megan worked in the IT industry for more than ten years prior to joining Ivey. She received her MBA degree from the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai in 2009.

Fei (Sophie) Zhu
Sophie is a Ph.D. candidate in general management. Her research interests include comparative studies of corporate entrepreneurship in Chinese and US/Canadian companies, corporate social responsibility in the Chinese context, and strategic leadership.
