Report: Dreaming of a Green Christmas? Sustainability and the Retail Industry - December 2010

Retailers may not be as green as they say they are. Beyond the occasional sustainable products, such as LED Christmas lights, organic cotton clothing, and fair trade chocolate, retailers have yet to green their operations. Shoppers have good reason to ask questions. After all, Canadians spent $34.5B in December 2009, representing more than a 6% jump over the previous year’s spending. This report provides an overview of the state of sustainability in the retail sector.

Report: Sustainability Trends in the Construction and Real Estate Industries. - October 2010

As the floodwaters recede and fires subside, the real estat and construction sectors must rebuild the damaged infrastructure. Ideally, such rebuilding would involve the principles of sustainability, so that the new infrastructure will be more resilient to future disasters. The report explores  the social, environmental, and governance practices within the real estate and construction industries.

Report: Oil and Gas Producers -Should we paint an entire industry with the "BP" Brush - July 2010

 As oil continues to wash up on shores across the Gulf Coast due to the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico, BP, the famously self-branded Beyond Petroleum oil giant, has placed a negative spotlight on an entire industry's environmental performance. The report explores oil and gas producers' actions and priorities, finding that the industry needs to better prioritize efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

Report: International Agreements for Banks' Lending Practices Not Yet Working - March 2010

Analysis of 213 banks worldwide shows that, for many banks, the international agreements governing their lending practices are not yet working.  The report highlights that banks receiving negative publicity due to controversies over their lending practices are often those banks that have committed to stronger governance and signed international initiatives regarding their lending practices.

Report for Managers - Thinking Long-Term: Climate Change and the Oil and Gas Industry - March 2010

This study investigated how firms balance the short-term demands with the long-term opportunities of climate change.  From November 2008 to October 2009, over 60 managers, consultants and NGO leaders with experience in the Alberta Oil Sands were interviewed.

Setting the Bar for Clean Energy - December 2009
The research of Adam Fremeth shows that regulators and energy firms both win when they find opportunities to cooperate. There is a dramatic reshaping of regulatory policy worldwide, not only in the environmental sphere but in many others. How firms influence and respond to policy will be a key priority, says Fremeth. He believes it's important that managers seek win-win situations.

In recent research, Allison Johnson finds that aligning brands with good causes can backfire.  Firms must present these initiatives in a way that is perceived by consumers as genuine and authentic.  Johnson's research helps marketers recognize the risks that missteps may pose as they pursue cause-related marketing.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Canada: The 2009 Ivey-Jantzi Research Report - May 2009
This is the second edition of the annual Ivey-Jantzi CSR Report. It examines the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of Canadian firms and highlights trends across Canadian industries in 2008. The objective is to examine the social responsibility of Canadian firms. The report highlights macro trends across and within industries in Canada and is intended to help firms understand overarching trends in order to inform their own policies and initiatives.

Managing regulation
In recent research on non-market strategies, John Maxwell explores self-regulation.  Self-regulation occurs when firms agree to voluntarily regulate themselves.  The goal of this activity is to pre-empt government action in such a way as to permit greater flexibility and efficiency for the firm.  In his research, John explores how and when firms should engage in self-regulatory activities.

Do Ethics Pay?
In recent research, June Cotte investigates whether consumers will pay more for products made by companies using high ethical standards.  Their work finds that consumers pay a little more for goods that are made ethically, but a lot less for those that are not.

Knowledge Priorities from the Research Network for Business Sustainability
This report identifies the business sustainability issues in which business needs better knowledge.  They were compiled by the Leadership Council comprised of representatives from firms leading in terms of sustainable practices.  The aim of the report is to galvanize researchers to study the questions of particular interest to industry and funding organizations

September 2007 - Many companies have had diversity initiatives for years. So, have they done all there is to do? Are Canadian companies doing enough to show that they truly value equality in the workplace?
