OUTREACH BY STUDENTS

Ivey faculty and students exemplify the school's mission of "contributing to the societies in which we operate" by being very active in the local London community and abroad. These activities are particularly valuable in finding the intersection between public and private interests. The following list briefly describes the various outreach activities undertaken by Ivey students that are related to the Centre for Building Sustainable Value.  

  • Ivey Connects Annual Report: Ivey Connects mission is to inspire every Ivey student to contribute to the societies in which they operate, now and in the future, and to provide them with meaningful and effective ways to do so. Ivey Connects provides opportunities for students to give their time through volunteerism and fundraising efforts, and their talent - management or otherwise - to those in need in the community.  This includes  Junior Achievement, Canadian Blood Services, Children's Aid, Community IMPACT Challenge, Pro-Bono Services, Summer Internship Program.
  • For their final Learning through Action event which concludes the HBA 1 students used their business and leadership skills to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of London by selling lemonade. Matthew Diamond, the Managing Partner of Hunter Straker and HBA '96 providing the class with tips and techniques and basic lemonade stands. The students raised $31,138 in 48 hours, triple the amount they predicted. Watch an interview with some of the participants.
  • Ivey Sustainability Initiatives: The initiatives are student-led but involve all members of the Ivey community including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This committed team includes representatives from the MBA, HBA, MSc, and PhD programs as well as staff and faculty. Visit Ivey Sustainability Initiatives for more information.
  • Ivey EcoChallenge: This week long challenge took place in March 2011. The Ivey community was challenged to commit to small lifestyle adjustments that help reduce ecological footprint. Find out more.
  • Ivey Connects: This student-led organization helps Ivey Students contribute in their societies - visit Ivey Connects for more information
  • Millennium Development Goals (MDG) tour: This event took place in November 2006, opening at Ivey and stopping at a number of universities.  Information about the tour is available at: Millennium Development Goals (MDG) tour.
  • International Contributions: Ivey students contribute around the world including a goat to a family in Bangladesh, support for a micro-credit initiative in Cambodia, antibiotics through World Vision, and a critical care ambulance to a community in Ghana (in conjunction with the Queensway Carlton Hospital)
  • Community Action Day: mobilises the entire class of over 450 first year MBA/HBA students for a full day of volunteering at local non-profit organisations.  Additional information available here.
  • The London Live Community Internship sponsors an Ivey student to a full-time summer position at a local non-profit organisation.  Additional information available here.
  • Consulting services: which match Ivey MBA/HBA students with community-based organisations to undertake pro-bono consulting projects as part of the Ivey Client Field Project and Ivey Connects programmes. Individual members of Ivey faculty also undertake pro-bono consulting projects on an ad hoc basis.
  • Overseas aid: through LEADER and the China Teaching Project, approximately 50 students, each year, teach students in Eastern Europe and in China about western business practices in order to provide local students the skills to facilitate economic development.
  • Partnership with CARE Canada: In the summer of 2005, Ivey professors formed a partnership with CARE Canada to write case studies and set up a framework for working with Kenyan MBA students on market-based development projects in rural Kenya.
  • Ivey Builds: partners Ivey students with Habitat for Humanity to build a wheelchair-accessible bungalow for a family in the London community. Ivey students design, fund and construct the house. This is the first initiative of its kind in Canada and the students who led this initiative won the Graduate Business Foundation's 2005 International Student Leadership Award.
  • The Ivey Builds Conferences: The 2005 conference entitled “What is Corporate Social Responsibility?” attracted over 400 participants and included speakers from business, NGOs, government and academia in 2005. The 2006 conference on crisis leadership will host speakers Rudy Giuliani, Peter Mansbridge, Colin D'Cunha and many others. Details can be found at www.iveybuilds.com.
  • Net Impact International Case Competition: brings students from different MBA programmes together to address a business sustainability and social responsibility.
  • Ivey Grail: is a community service student club which organises philanthropic events such as blood, food and toy drives.
  • Sustainable Development Club: This club for MBAs hosts guest speakers and networks with other clubs across North America through the Net Impact organization.
  • New Venture Project (NVP) in Kenya: As part of their NVP, four Ivey MBA students will be travelling in May of 2006 to Kenya to work with MBA students from the U.S. International University, Nairobi, Kenya. The students will work for CARE Kenya to develop business models for social enterprises aimed at reducing poverty among Kenya's poorest citizens.
  • Consulting for Non-profit organizations and social enterprises: Every final year MBA and HBA students completes a year-end consulting project, some of which are for established programs (ICFP) or new ventures (NVP). Many of these organizations are non-profits or social enterprises. In 2005, approximately 10 organizations received pro bono consulting work from Ivey students.
