Kerplunk-ing for a Good Cause |
|
Ivey's HBA students enjoyed spirited
competition with
David Simpson and
Professor
Eric Morse in the Atrium on
Wednesday during a Kerplunk(TM)
tournament for charity.
The game
of KerPlunk(TM) is a class
metaphor used in Entrepreneurial Finance
to discuss ranking of creditors. The
students were also fortunate to have as
a class guest Mr. Scott Forbes of "Kids
Alive International." Scott gave a
presentation on financing a
not-for-profit organization, which
requires some incredible entrepreneurial
skills. Kids Alive provides orphanages
for kids hit by the ravages of AIDS
primarily in Africa.
The
class metaphor was combined with the
students' desire to make a difference in
the world, and the KerPlunk(TM)
tournament was created. Each participant
paid an entry fee for the tournament and
in those fees combined with some
fundraising during a party after the
last day of class resulted in about $500
raised for Kids Alive.
Despite
accusations of 'home ice advantage' when
the final game was played using his
daughter's game, David Simpson was the
clear winner of the tournament.

A New
Twist on the Annual Egg-Drop Challenge |

in Professor Dietz's cross-cultural
management course ended with the egg
drop challenge. Students in the course
had partnered up with students at the
Johannes Kepler University in Linz,
Austria, in virtual teams.
Communicating via videoconferences and
internet media, the virtual teams had to
design and build egg-drop protectors.

At the

passionately about the
Millennium Development Goals,
outlining each goal and explaining to

The theme of her presentation was
"Leading the Change" and she appealed to

Dr. Kirsty Duncan |
|
|
|
Wendy Boothman from Talented Women also
spoke to the group, sharing her
international experiences that led her
to create an online mentoring community
for women in business.
The pair
are currently touring seven other

Michigan, University of Chicago, and
Queen's, rallying interest and building
knowledge about MDG's.
Each
participating school has been delegated
one of the MDG’s with the goal of
building awareness throughout the
school. Ivey's MDG is "to ensure
environmental sustainability" and
Ivey Connects has a series of
activities and events planned this
coming school year that build around
this theme.
The tour
will close at Ivey on Monday, November
20th (12:45-2PM in 1R40) – Ivey Builds
is planning to build on the momentum of
