FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Visa

All students coming into Canada to study must apply through the Canadian embassy in their home country for a student visa. Check the requirements with the Canadian embassy several months prior to your expected arrival date. Canadian law requires students to confirm their source of financial support for the entire study period and, in some countries, to have a medical examination. Further details for students from
China are available through this page. Check the Canadian immigration website for instructions.

Health Issues and Health Coverage

What happens if you get sick?

Students who arrive in Canada on a Study Permit are required to pay for and be covered under the University Health Insurance Plan (
UHIP).

UHIP covers most hospital and doctor's offices services. Separate coverage is recommended for prescriptions, dentist and eye glasses. Blue Cross is an example of a private provider in Canada.

Students who arrive in Canada with permanent residency must enrol in the provincial health insurance plan. In Ontario, that plan is OHIP which is available through the OHIP office at 217 York Street, London, telephone 1-519-675-6700. There will be a 3-month waiting period. During that time you must apply for and pay for UHIP.

You do NOT want to be uninsured!!! It can be very costly!!!
