Community Internship Program

What is the Ivey Connects Community Internship Program?

The Ivey Connects Community Internship Program is designed to give business students greater awareness of how the community sector operates by giving them an opportunity to work over the summer for a not-for-profit organization in the Toronto or London regions. Toronto internships will be funded by RBC, and London internships will be funded by London Life. NPOs will gain strategic decision-making and implementation, and students will gain practical work experience. The program began in 2005 and has funded 19 London non-profit internships to date. In 2012, the program will expand to give students the opportunity to work in the GTA.

Who are Student Interns?
Student interns are third-year university students completing their Honors Business Administration (HBA) degree at the Richard Ivey School of Business (Ivey). Previous work experiences from students range from accounting to marketing to customer relationship functions.

Applications Now Closed
Applications for NPOs to submit internship proposals are now closed. The next round of internship applications will open December 2012.

Timeline of Application Process
Final decisions regarding NPO applicants awarded internship funding will be sent early January. Internship opportunities will be posted on Ivey’s Career Management website by mid-January. An information session will be hosted on campus to introduce NPO representatives to Ivey student applicants. All student applications will be forwarded to the non-profit contact to screen applicants and conduct interviews with candidates. Historically, interviews have been conducted in early February and candidates have been notified of their application status by the end of February. The interview method will be completely under the NPO’s control.

Testimonials from Previous Participants
"My role was to create a 3 year strategic plan for the organization. Within my position I had a great deal of autonomy and was able to collect and analyze data, meet with managers/directors, and work on projects within the organization as I saw fit."

- Salvation Army Centre of Hope Summer Intern

"The internship program provides participating organizations with the opportunity to have access to local expertise with a fresh perspective providing valuable insight into the operation of the organization."
