Policy Workshop
The Ontario -
Québec Continental Gateway and Trade Corridor:
Developing Competitive and Sustainable
Transportation Policy Workshop
On March 9-11,
2008, the Lawrence National Centre for Policy
and Management at the Richard Ivey School of
Business, University of Western Ontario in
London, Ontario, will host a workshop entitled,
The Ontario-Québec Continental Gateway and Trade
Corridor: Developing Competitive and Sustainable
Transportation Policy Workshop.
The Lawrence National Centre is working in
partnership with the Ministry of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, Canada, as well
as the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario,
the Ministère des Transports du Québec, and HEC
(Hautes Études Commerciales) Montréal, to bring
together seventy representatives from business,
government, non-governmental agencies, academia
and students. The involvement of our students
will introduce them to government policy
development and application. This workshop is
part of a series of meetings and discussions to
consider and advise on the implementation of
sound and sustainable policy measures to support
the development of a modern and efficient
transportation system. Efficient gateways and
corridors will fuel economic growth and boost
Canada’s competitiveness in global markets.
We ask that you support our investigation to
advance the action plan that will address issues
linked to transportation:
- global
markets and trade opportunities for Canada
and North America;
- developing
a strategy for infrastructure that responds
to a highly competitive transportation
system;
- the
retooling of Canadian cities and the
training of our workforce;
- reducing
congestion at borders;
- the role of
the private and public sectors in the
development and implementation of gateways
and corridors;
- multimodal
integration; and
- ensuring
sustainable trade and transport systems
while minimizing our environmental
footprint.
Global innovators
in the field of infrastructure and
transportation will lead workshop sessions.
Learned participants will contribute to a
meaningful dialogue on critical issues in a
neutral and supportive environment. Speakers
from Canada, Europe and the United States will
illuminate successful practices for Canadian
industry and governments.
To address the challenges of developing a
competitive continental gateway and trade
corridor in Ontario and Quebec, governments, the
public and private sectors, and academia must
work together to proactively find solutions that
lead to informed policy outcomes. The Lawrence
National Centre for Policy and Management is
committed to developing sound public policy by
encouraging us to think globally, act
strategically, and contribute to the societies
in which we live.
