Work and Play at Ivey

Pursuing an MBA had always been on my “things to do” list. When I was evaluating business schools, I was attracted to Ivey for its strong reputation and the opportunity to become a part of the world-class alumni network. Prior to joining Ivey, I worked in Management Consulting, where I played an advisory role to clients across many industry sectors. My goal was to pursue a career in New York City and I gained a lot of knowledge by connecting with Ivey alum in NYC who openly shared their experiences and advice with me.

The classroom environment at Ivey is very dynamic, and while the workload is intense, I’ve become a huge fan of the case method - you’re not just learning concepts but analyzing multi-faceted problems. I’ve thought about issues like I never have before and heard my diverse and intelligent classmates offer up new ways of solving real business challenges. In our learning teams, we tackled the infamous 24-hour reports, communication presentations, marketing simulations and the state of the world project...which strengthened our bond and emphasized how much of our learning is really from one another. The high standards in the classroom are balanced with numerous extracurricular activities. I hold a few executive roles on Ivey Clubs; in fact the majority of class is involved as a Senator or has a Club position. Also, our illustrious social senators plan our weekly outings for us to step away from our books and have some fun.

Business school not only offers some valuable learning experiences but it has also been more fun than I ever thought. I attended the Net Impact Conference at the Wharton School in Philadelphia, the Canadian MBA Games at Dalhousie University in Halifax and represented Ivey at the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations in New York City. I went on the China Study Trip - definitely a highlight of the program. We took an in-depth look into doing business in China and immersed ourselves into Chinese culture by visiting Xian, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. It was a trip filled with adventure, sightseeing, networking, partying and was truly memorable.

After graduating, I’m going to participate in the Ivey India Teaching and Entrepreneurship Project in Mumbai and go travelling for a few months before entering the “real world of work” again. It’s true what they say, Ivey changes your life. To me, what really makes Ivey different is the community you are a part of; everyone is passionate and energetic about collectively achieving success. It’s one-year of my life that I’ll never forget!
