TORONTO,
April 28 - On May 8, Nick Leeson,
infamous for his role in the collapse of
Barings Bank in 1995, will share his
insight and frank account of his actions
that led to the downfall of the banking
empire.
Mr.
Leeson will speak in Toronto in the
evening following a morning address to
students at the Richard Ivey School of
Business. The students will be
discussing a case study on the Barings
Bank collapse and Mr. Leeson will tackle
the question of how similar financial
debacles continue to happen and what
safeguards are needed to avoid them.
Following the morning discussion,
students will take part in the Ivey Ring
Tradition Ceremony which involves a
pledge to act ethically and honestly in
all their activities and to recognize
the responsibility they have to the
broader community. The Ivey Ring
Tradition Ceremony was started in 2004
by Ivey's Alumni Association as a
response to scandals in the past few
decades.
Mr.
Leeson was sentenced to six years by a
Singapore court for forgery and
cheating. He is clear in his
presentations that what he did was
wrong, that he deeply regrets his
actions and that the consequences he has
suffered, including imprisonment, were
justified. He welcomes the opportunity
to discuss his mistakes and the
consequences he experienced.
For
future business leaders, it's important
not to just focus on success, but to
also hear how people get themselves into
trouble. Mr. Leeson will also highlight
the importance for all businesses of
integrating financial oversight into an
enterprise-wide system that supports and
promotes ethical behaviour.
