LONDON,
ON, August 4, 2009 - Richard Ivey
School of Business shares the sadness at
the death of Richard John "Jack"
Lawrence, an alumnus and founder of the
Lawrence National Centre for Policy and
Management at Ivey Business School.
Ivey's
Lawrence National Centre is named in his
honour, following a generous $3.7
million donation to his alma mater. The
Lawrence National Centre created a much
needed forum for business, media,
students and academia to work with
government and actively participate in
public policy issues for the greater
Canadian good.
Throughout
his career, Jack Lawrence firmly
believed in corporate Canada's ability
to affect the direction of public policy
and the importance of public policy in
ensuring a powerful future for Canada in
the global environment.
"We will
miss him greatly. Jack was committed to
our students and dedicated to giving
students not only a sense of business,
but a strong commitment to their country
as well," said Carol Stephenson, Dean,
Richard Ivey School of Business.
"He
believed that our future business
leaders should, through public policy,
influence the quality of life in our
country and ensure economic success,"
said Dianne Cunningham, Director,
Lawrence National Centre for Policy and
Management, Richard Ivey School of
Business. "I know Jack believed that;
"If we could really achieve more
cooperation between government and
business, we would see a quantum leap in
economic performance and productivity"."
Jack
Lawrence graduated from Ivey's
undergraduate program (HBA) in 1956 and
in the years that followed influenced
and contributed to Canada's economic
policies and was instrumental in helping
business gain a larger voice in
policy-making decisions.
Jack
Lawrence was most recently the Chairman
and CEO of Lawrence & Company Inc. a
firm he founded in 1996 and he was
well-known for his influence in Canadian
business.
