Mastering the art of tough conversations

Leadership expert reveals tips for constructive communication

LONDON, ON, September 21, 2009 - Open communication, in good times and bad, is one of the key factors for running a successful business.

However, some conversations - such as those on performance issues - can be difficult.

Jeffrey Gandz, Professor and Director of Ivey's Executive Development program, will share seven essential requirements for "tough" conversations to make them more effective and likely to result in a commitment to change. He'll present "Having Tough Conversations" to a capacity crowd on September 23 at 12 p.m. at Ivey's ING Leadership Centre in Toronto.

The discussion will centre around the role of tough conversations in both performance and developmental coaching, the essential components for these conversations and how mastering this skill is essential for leaders. He'll also share his experience of the realities associated with having these discussions.

"There is a positive side to having tough conversations. When done well, they can be constructive and motivating and help companies to perform better in the present and build for the future," he said. "It's a critical competence for successful leaders."

Gandz is an expert in leadership development and is the author of four books, many articles in both practitioner and academic magazines and journals, and more than 100 case studies used in management development programs around the world. He also develops custom programs for companies in North America and Asia and consults with public- and private-sector organizations about their leadership development processes.

The event is part of the Ivey Business School's Executive Development talent development lunch series.
