Celebrating contributions of Canadian family businesses

Expert will share advice for staying the course

LONDON, ON, October 15, 2009 - When it comes to navigating the complex world of family business, David Bork, a pre-eminent family business counsellor, can provide rock-solid advice.

Bork has helped more than 400 families in business to chart through family business issues, such as creating a sustainable decision-making structure, succession between generations, death of the founder, sale of the business and the complexities of dealing with wealth.

He'll share tips for running a successful family business at the 6th Annual National Family Business Day celebration hosted by the Canadian Association of Family Enterprise (CAFE) Southwestern Ontario and the Business Families Centre at the Richard Ivey School of Business.

Bork will present "Future Focus: Leading Today for Tomorrow" at the event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at London Hunt and Country Club. Pre-registration is required.

Bork is the author of "Family Business", "Risky Business How to Make it Work" and co-author of "Working With Family Business, A Guide for Professionals".

The event will also include a family business panel session with Tom Hayter, President of Hayter's Turkey Farms Limited, a family-owned turkey farm in Dashwood, Ontario; Barb Molinaro, Vice-President/Operations of Dowler-Karn, a St. Thomas-based regional fuel and lubricant supplier; and Murray Flanagan, Senior Vice-President /Treasurer of Flanagan Foodservice Inc., the largest Canadian family-owned foodservice distributor, with offices in Kitchener, Owen Sound and Sudbury.

CAFE Southwestern Ontario will also present an achievement award for the Southwestern Ontario Family Enterprise of the Year 2009, sponsored by national partners KPMG Enterprise and RBC.

"Family businesses face the same challenges of other businesses with the addition of special dynamics of ownership, leadership and management by family members," said David Simpson, Executive Director of the Business Families Centre, Richard Ivey School of Business. "Despite these challenges, they outperform and outlast traditional businesses, even in tough economies. Canadian family businesses fuel our economy so there is much to celebrate."

The mandate of the Business Families Centre at the Richard Ivey School of Business includes a three-pronged approach to business families: study, support, and celebrate.
