LONDON, ON, October 26, 2009 - The Richard Ivey School of Business congratulates its graduating class of business students who have just received, in addition to their business degrees, a ring that symbolizes their pledge to act ethically.
As part of their recent convocation
ceremony, 94 undergraduate business
students pledged to act ethically and
honestly in all their activities.
Students were then presented with a
ring, identified with a serial number,
symbolizing the pledge.
The most recent Ivey Ring Tradition
Ceremony took place on October 22 at the
Richard Ivey School of Business.
Distinguished Ivey alumni, including Liz
Snelgrove, Vice-President of Sales and
Marketing with Active Health Management,
and Shawn Ivey, Global ERP and IS System
Analyst of LeaderWescast Industries
Inc., attended the event.
The annual pledge was created in 2004 by the Ivey Alumni Association to instill in its members pride and a sense of obligation.
In just five years, about 4,000 graduating students and alumni from Ivey degree programs - 20 per cent of alumni - have taken the pledge.
"The Ring Ceremony goes beyond a pledge of ethics. Ethics are a part of it, but it's about members of the alumni community making a commitment to themselves and to fellow members," said Kevin O'Brien, Chair of the Ivey Alumni Association and Vice-President of Strategy and Planning with Aeroplan Canada. "This tradition helps the School to build a network of strong alumni who maintain Ivey's impressive reputation."
"The pledge helps us to uphold the Ivey tradition of developing business leaders who think globally, act strategically and contribute to the societies in which they operate," said Carol Stephenson, Dean, Richard Ivey School of Business. "The ring serves as a tangible reminder to our graduates to aim for the highest professional standards."
While the number of business schools enacting pledges for their graduates continues to rise, Ivey Business School was one of the first business schools to enact an ethics pledge. Ivey's ceremony differs from those at other schools because it involves both a pledge and a ring.
