Robert Tattersall to teach why bigger isn't always better when investing in companies
LONDON, ON, April 23, 2010 - On the heels of visits with famed value investors Warren Buffett and Prem Watsa, Ivey students will get another lesson on investing "bargain hunting" from Robert Tattersall, a high-profile Canadian value investor.
Tattersall is Executive Vice-President and Senior Portfolio Manager of Howson Tattersall, a Toronto-based investment firm operated by Mackenzie Investments. Known for discovering undervalued small- to medium-sized companies, Tattersall will speak at the Richard Ivey School of Business on April 26 about his company's investing strategy, which focuses on estimating the long-term profitability of a company rather than short-term earnings.
The presentation is part of Ivey Professor George Athanassakos' value investing course. Athanassakos heads Ivey's Value Investing Centre and holds the Ben Graham Chair in Value Investing.
Tattersall's visit is one of several special events in the value investing course. David J. Winters of Wintergreen Advisors recently spoke with Ivey students about "Trifecta" companies. Earlier this year, the students also visited renowned value investor Warren Buffett at his company headquarters in Omaha. They also recently met Prem Watsa, the "Buffett of the North," and attended the annual meeting of shareholders for Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd.
Athanassakos said such events help to reinforce the learning in the classroom.
"We've focused on connecting the students with people who fit our mandate of promoting the style of investing developed by Benjamin Graham, referred to as Value Investing," he said. "Our students have been privileged to gain insights from financial geniuses in this field."
