The Value of Values in Business Leadership
Ivey Idea Forum explores the power of doing virtuous business
LONDON, ON, November 8, 2010 – Managing virtues and ethics with profits and sustainability is a complicated balancing act for many business leaders. But there are a few, some of who are the most celebrated and influential in the world, who equally integrate virtues and ethics into their business model and guide their businesses to success. These leaders prove how guiding businesses by values can be a powerful formula for long-term success.
On November 11 in Toronto, former Wall Street financier, Ted Malloch, Chairman and CEO of The Roosevelt Group, will share his insights on how becoming “The Good Leader” and doing virtuous business can pay off for organizations in the long run.
“Success is not an accident or matter of luck. We prepare for business success by acquiring virtues—dispositions that help us to take risks, to make decisions, to take responsibilities for our actions, and to accept wise advice and correction,” said Malloch. “Everyone knows that the best and lasting companies breed virtuous corporate cultures.”
He will share the results of more than a dozen personal in-depth interviews recorded with iconic leaders, to find the answer to the age old question: Can good guys finish first?
Drawing on ideals and insights from some of the most revered leaders in the world Malloch will explore the importance of creating wealth in a responsible way and how business leaders can achieve this pursuit.
Malloch will also discuss how a focus on profits and lack of virtues guiding decisions contributed to the recent financial crisis and why focusing on virtues may help prevent a recurrence.
“Only by returning to the question of ethical norms — things which people must possess before they go to market to compete can we regain our way and have some sense again of a moral compass. These are the indispensable supports, which preserve both the market and competition from degeneration,” said Malloch.
