Canada 2020, an independent progressive think-tank, conducted a recent panel discussion in Ottawa on the role government should play in the economy, especially related to job losses in manufacturing.

Assistant Professor Mike Moffatt served as a panellist and discussed the need for innovation in Canada’s manufacturing sector.

Moffatt said the government needs to factor in how it invests in training programs.

“What do we do with a 45-year old laid off auto worker?” he asked. “Because 20 years from now, that’s going to be a 45-year old laid off Uber driver. And we’re going to go through the same issues. I think we really need to be thinking about this now, because that problem is already here.”
