Women today are still dealing with gender inequality concerning unequal pay in equal positions with equal education. Consequently, it’s an ongoing uphill battle to interest women in pursuing an MBA.

Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) in Australia has implemented a new scholarship program that provides 100 women the opportunity to get their MBA free – or at least almost free. As a result, MGSM hopes to become the first top 50-rated business school in the world to achieve gender balance.

Sharon Irwin-Foulon, Executive Director of Career Management and Corporate Recruiting at Ivey, spoke with The Globe and Mail regarding her concerns about implementing a similar program.

“Certainly we give lots of scholarships and I think it’s in every university’s best interest to nurture and bring women in,” said Irwin-Foulon. “But I think where I’m getting nervous … is bringing women in just for the sake of having a bigger number.”
