Although Subway has cut ties to its former spokesperson Jared Fogle, who recently pled guilty to acts of pedophilia, public relations crisis management experts said the move came too late. 

Lecturer Mary Weil spoke with Yahoo News about how spokespeople have a tendency to become tethered to a brand’s image. She discussed the damage that can cause and the precautions to take in order to protect a brand’s reputation.

“The challenge is anything that person says or does, anything they tweet or post on YouTube – it becomes synonymous with your brand because you’ve woven them into your brand,” said Weil.
