BlackBerry announced it is getting out of the business of making smartphones. This move comes at a time when its hardware division has been losing money. The iconic Waterloo-based firm will now focus its efforts on its more profitable software and business services market.

In just a few short years, BlackBerry has gone from being the largest seller of smartphones in the world to controlling less than one per cent of the market. Ivey Associate Professor Glenn Rowe spoke to Maclean's about this important business decision.

“If part of your business is not profitable, and you don’t see a way to make it profitable, I think it makes sense to get out of it.”
