General Management is an evolving and
dynamic field, drawing upon different disciplinary perspectives, such as
sociology, psychology, anthropology and economics. GM uses different
approaches, frameworks and models to examine how firms can remain
successful in a rapidly changing world characterized by increasing
globalization, heightened competitive pressures and complex social and
technological environments. In addition, researchers in GM examine the
impact of senior leaders (i.e., the general manager) on the firm and
firm performance.
The doctoral
program in General Management is designed for people planning an
academic career or research based career; we provide our graduates with
training that will lead to a successful career in university research
and teaching. Students take the full spectrum of PhD Foundation and Area
special field offerings. Courses offered by other non-business programs
such as economics, psychology, statistics and sociology may be taken to
augment the student’s knowledge of both methods and substantive areas.
Other aspects of the program are tailored to fit the student’s own
research, teaching and professional interests.
The
General Management group includes the following broad research areas:
Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship, Global Environment of
Business and International Business. Strategic Management explores how
enterprises (whether private, public, not-for-profit) create, capture
and distribute value and how they organize for those visions and goals.
Entrepreneurship is the study of creative destruction that creates new
products and business models while eliminating others. It includes
researching those processes involved in discovering, evaluating, and
exploiting opportunities that go on to solidify themselves in the form
of new business ventures, as well as studying the entrepreneurs
themselves. GEOB explores how forces like technological change,
macroeconomic policies and global trading practices impact businesses
while International Business concerns how firms become and remain
international in scope. It involves both small and medium sized
organizations and larger Multi-national enterprises, with respect to
internationalization, and ongoing multinational management.
