The doctoral program in Organizational
Behaviour is designed to train students for an academic career with an
emphasis on research. The field of OB focuses on understanding the
behavior of individuals, groups and organizations. This field uses
theory and methods from a wide variety of disciplines including
psychology, sociology, political science, anthropology, statistics and
economics.
The research of our
faculty and doctoral students reflects a wide range of interests,
including: leadership, personnel selection, gender and diversity in the
workplace, discrimination and prejudice, expatriate management,
goal-setting, group learning and team processes, errors, high
performance work systems, and organizational mindfulness.
Doctoral
students take the full spectrum of PhD Foundation courses and
Organizational Behaviour Special Field offerings. Courses offered by
other non-business programs such as economics, psychology, statistics
and sociology may be taken to augment the student’s knowledge of both
methods and substantive areas. Other aspects of the program are tailored
to fit the student’s own research, teaching and professional interests.
- Individual and the Organization 9806 a/b
This seminar focuses on micro theories of organizational behavior, the study of intra-individual level variables such as cognitions, emotions, motives, and attitudes. It also includes the study of individual behavior such as turnover, citizenship, whistle blowing, deviance, and other individual level variables relevant to organizational behavior. - Group Behaviour 9816 a/b
This course covers the social and psychological theories of interpersonal and group behavior in organizations, the study of inter-personal level variables such as power, social cognition and leadership. It also includes the study of group behavior such as group formation and development, decision making, and conflict. - Organizational Theory 9826 a/b
Students are introduced to key issues and perspectives in organizational theory. Each class is designed to provide some exposure both in important historical contributions and to recent treatments of the topic. Each class also contains both theoretical and empirical contributions.
