Why did you decide to do an Executive MBA?

I chose to pursue an EMBA because it was the right fit for me personally and professionally. Professionally, I felt I already had a solid foundation in business through my Bachelor of Commerce degree and experience at McKinsey & Company and BMO Financial Group. What I was looking for was a program to stretch my leadership capabilities and understanding of senior level decision making and direction setting. The type of education provided in an EMBA program perfectly fit that bill. In addition, with an EMBA I would be able to continue to progress my career and sustain elements of my personal life. It was a win from all angles.

Why did you choose Ivey?

Ivey was my first choice for the EMBA program. What I really liked was the case-based format as it emphasizes learning through solving real business problems as opposed to theory. What's more, the case format expands the sources of learning beyond the professor to the whole classroom. In the Ivey program, the students are of a high calibre which allows me to learn from the wealth of insight and experience my peers share during our team and classroom discussions. The long-term benefit of being an Ivey alumnus was another key factor in my decision. The Ivey network and brand, especially in the Toronto business community, are very strong and I felt that they were something I would continue to benefit from long after I graduated.

What benefits have you seen so far in your career?

What was really exciting was to experience the immediate benefits to my career while going through the program. After each module, I would return to work with new ideas and approaches. This not only solidified the learning I obtained in class but made me much more effective in my role at that time. An invaluable benefit of the EMBA has been clarity in where I want to take my career moving forward. Through the in-class exercises, conversations with classmates, as well as exposure to a wide spectrum of roles, companies and industries I have a better sense of the environments in which I thrive and areas I can apply my talents. By having a good sense of my destination, I am better able to navigate the waters along my career journey.
