Why did you decide to do an Executive MBA?

With 12 years of experience in the banking industry, I began to feel I was becoming specialized. I wanted to expand my knowledge of different areas of business, have a broader view when handling problems and overall become a better transformational leader. Having completed my bachelor's degree in Science, I felt pursuing an MBA would enable me to better understand the business world. I decided to pursue an Executive MBA because not only does it provide me with foundational knowledge, the program also mimics the real business world where you tackle different cases and get to practice your leadership skills everyday. A lot of the learning also comes from EMBA colleagues who bring their rich and diverse experience from various industries to the classroom.

Why did you choose Ivey?

I chose Ivey for two reasons - the case study teaching method because it replicates the environment at work and the great experience I had with Ivey when researching which schools to apply. My decision was made the day I sat in one of the classes and experienced what day in class is like, something Ivey encourages prospective candidates to do when considering the EMBA program. Every member of Ivey, including faculty, current students and alumni, took personal interest and helped me through the research process by answering questions and addressing my concerns. Ivey faculty is of the highest calibre. They create a rich learning environment by promoting healthy debates, discussing different viewpoints and often you don't even realize when the four hour class comes to an end. The convenience of a Toronto campus and 4 day monthly class schedule is a great format for me as it creates a balance between work and school life.

What benefits have you seen so far in your career?

Ivey has given me the tools and confidence to deal with business problems strategically. With only 5 months in the program, I have already seen noticeable changes in my level of comfort in dealing with ambiguous situations and decision making. Ivey teaches you the framework on how to deal with real life business problems and you can immediately apply the learning in your workplace the following day. In addition, by working through cases and projects during the term, I have had the great opportunity to learn about various industries, their challenges and processes and I can easily apply these insights to my work.
