Lauren Michell, MBA ’18 candidate, is the recipient of the MBA ’89 Scholarship and the MBA Class of 2004 Award. She wrote a blog for Donor Thank You Day, expressing her gratitude for the awards and the opportunity they gave her to study at Ivey.
Witnessing Ivey’s support of MBA students, and receiving these awards, has affirmed to me that the Ivey community places significant value on supporting both its students and alumni, as well as on affecting positive change in the world around us. This has to me very clearly illustrated that Ivey is a place where I belong, and that my peers and I will be encouraged to change the world around us for the better as we pursue success. For this, I am truly and especially appreciative.
I came to the Ivey MBA Program in search of a learning environment that would help me to achieve professional success both in the short-term and for many years thereafter. I was keen to develop the leadership skills that are essential for long-term success in the modern global business environment, and it quickly became apparent to me that the Ivey MBA Program was the ideal environment for this kind of transformational learning.
I believe that leadership extends far beyond the traditional concept of professional success, and am thrilled to see this concept in practice at Ivey. As an undergraduate student, I became very involved in student government, peer mentorship, and academic case competitions as both a competitor and volunteer. Over time, this evolved into a deep-rooted passion for giving back to the organizations and communities that have positively impacted my life. I have remained involved with several Toronto-based philanthropic organizations while at Ivey, and hope to leverage my newly-expanded skill set to continue to add value and become more involved in the near future.
What I expected from Ivey was a world-class learning environment, in which I would be surrounded by premier faculty and peers who would challenge me and expand my horizons; of course, I found this very easily. I have found that, every day, my classmates continue to impress by demonstrating the leadership, values, and integrity that initially drew me to the program, which I believe is reflective of Ivey’s incredible culture.
There are opportunities at every turn to become involved both directly within our MBA community, such as roles with the MBA Association and the many, many student clubs, as well as to a myriad of external groups and organizations upon which the talents and time of the MBA Class of 2018 can drive positive, long-term value and change.
With all of this in mind, I am proud and excited to be begin the second half of my MBA journey at Ivey, and could not be more excited to see what is in store for the next six months.
