MSc International Business 2018

Degree

MSc 2018, Ivey Business School

Briefly, describe your background and profile. Think about how Ivey is/will complement your own personal background and experience.

Throughout my undergraduate career, I had accumulated a vast array of experiences both inside and outside of school. I have experience working at medical labs, auto manufacturing, retail sales, and sports management, all of which have provided me valuable learning lessons. I always had the aptitude and interest in business studies, but I never committed myself to it. I felt that this pre-experience master’s program would help me transition into the business world, allow me to leverage my previous experiences, and become a leader.

Think back to when you were researching business schools. What did Ivey offer you that other schools did not? What made it a good fit for you?

I actually did not research any other business school. As a student of Western University and with many friends at Ivey, I knew that it was a great school. I knew that this program was the right fit for me for many reasons. Firstly, Ivey emphasizes that the MSc is a pre-experience program that aims to equip the candidate with the right tools and the necessary experience to tackle today's global business problems. Secondly, the Ivey Global Lab (IGL) is an unparalleled experience that most schools do not offer. Furthermore, with India as a destination country, I knew that I wanted to join the program as an opportunity to reconnect with family and my culture. Lastly, the network, career management. and alumni support was an important factor in order for me to develop professionally. I knew that Ivey offers one of the best career management teams in North America and heavily encourages alumni support. With my friends as examples of the "Ivey Difference," I knew that Ivey was the right school for me.

Think about your first few days and weeks in the program – what were your thoughts? Feelings? Concerns? How do you feel now?

As someone with minimal business background, I was asked to complete the Pre-Knowledge Program (PKP). This PKP program preceded the term and it aims to provide a basic introduction to various disciplines of business — a crash course on business basics. My first few weeks were very exciting but extremely busy, far busier than the term. During these first few weeks in January, I got a chance to interact and develop relationships with the faculty and the students. Personally, I did not have many concerns entering the program because I trusted the Ivey process and so far everything is going well. I have had to opportunity to learn a lot about business, the industry, and myself. I feel fortunate and grateful that I am surrounded by a culture of perseverance, hard work, and peers that enhance my learning experience.

How do you see the case-method developing you as a business leader?

I had the opportunity to take Business 2257 during my undergraduate degree in which I was exposed to the case methodology. Although very different from all of my science courses, I had a very memorable experience learning through cases. I felt that I absorbed and learned the content with much higher retention, all the while being able to place the knowledge to real world scenarios. The case method has taught me to become a better decision maker, to be detail oriented and, most importantly, to work with others. Through the case method, I have also gained a lot of knowledge about real companies and industries all of which has accumulated to develop me as a business leader with a global mindset.
