Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPAC)s are modelled after Canada’s Capital Pool Companies, but are typically 100 times as large. In the last year, approximately 500 SPACs have gone public in the U.S., and a few in other countries around the world. A number of prominent operating companies have announced mergers with SPACs, including Singapore’s Grab ride-hailing service.
For the 2021 Arkadi Kuhlmann Lecture Series in Finance, we turn to University of Florida Finance Professor Jay Ritter – also known as “Mr. IPO” – for a look at the past, present, and future of SPACs. Professor Ritter is widely regarded as the leading scholar studying initial public offerings. Join us on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a complimentary livestream presentation and Q&A session. The event will be moderated by Craig Dunbar, an Associate Professor of Finance at the Ivey Business School and holder of the Tangerine Chair in Finance.
Topics You Will Explore
- Are SPACs in a bubble? Are they here to stay?
- What is the advantage for an operating company to go public via a merger with a SPAC rather than a traditional IPO?
