Ottawa politicians have been under fire for high outplacement costs, but Professor Fraser Johnson says the sooner outgoing employees gain a new job, the better.

Outplacement typically involves hiring a third-party company to help laid-off employees find new employment. In the Canadian HR Reporter, Johnson explains why employers should take more care in selecting outplacement agencies and managing the service. He said proper outplacement services ensure a quick career transition.

“You’re not talking about a lot of money [for outplacement services], relative to how much people are typically being paid,” he said. “The sooner somebody can get re-employed, the less amount of money you have to pay them in terms of severance and termination.”
