Ottawa-based website retailer Shopify has already been under fire for its association with the controversial website, Breitbart, and now its other affiliations are under the microscope. Guns, drugs, and escort services can also be purchased through Shopify-hosted websites, which has people questioning the company’s values.
In the Ottawa Sun, Assistant Professor Cara Maurer comments on Shopify’s decision to host Breitbart’s retail website, despite a petition with more than 200,000 signatures asking it to drop Breitbart.
“This may be the most challenging time that Shopify has faced,” says Maurer. “But, it may also be an opportunity for clarifying itself on where it ultimately stands and it’s good to know the values that a company ultimately stands for going forward.”
Maurer says it’s time for Shopify to follow suit with Amazon, Facebook, and Twitter and crack down on products and services promoting illegal activity, the use of fire arms, or hate speech.
