NSERC Discovery Grants

Discovery Grants (DG) Program support ongoing programs of research (with long-term goals) rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances, whether made individually or in groups. Researchers are free to work in the mode most appropriate for the research area.

Note: You must submit a Notice of Intent in order to apply for this program. NSERC will not accept any NOI after the deadline.

Deadlines: NSERC: NOI (including CCV) - August 1st at 8pm (ET)
Ivey: MANDATORY - Tuesday, October 18

NSERC Research Tools and Instruments (RTI) Program

RTI grants foster and enhance the discovery, innovation and training capability of university researchers in the natural sciences and engineering by supporting the purchase of research equipment. While applications to this program are not due until the fall, here is some helpful information:

  • There is no Notice of Intent stage for RTI.
  • NSERC has eliminated the institutional ‘quota’ system for the RTI program this year (i.e. there is no cap on the number of applications Western can submit).
  • An individual can only participate in one application per competition, whether as Principal Investigator or co-applicant.
  • The RTI application will be available in the Research Portal in early August. NSERC has indicated the application is being streamlined.
  • A Common CV is required for Principal Investigators and Co-applicants.
  • Research Finance/Procurement has helpful tools related to planning an ‘equipment’ budget application
Deadlines: Ivey: Please let Shelley Bellyou or Kathy Laid know if you are applying to this program by September 1st, and we’ll work with you based on the deadlines adhered to below. We strongly encourage utilizing the Optional Review through Research Western.
Research Western:
OPTIONAL: Friday, September 22
The Research Development team may be able to provide internal reviews and feedback on RTI proposals on a best-effort basis if submitted to Antoinette Martin by/before this date. Proposal content feedback will be provided by October 6.
MANDATORY: October 18, 2017
Email a PDF copy of your application (exported from the Research Portal – drafts accepted), along with ROLA proposal
NSERC: October 25, 2017, 2pm : When applications are submitted, it does not go directly to NSERC. It is electronically routed to Research Services. Research Services can forward an application to NSERC once the ROLA proposal has passed the Faculty Associate Dean, Research in the e-approval queue.
