Ivey Professor, Diane-Laure Arjaliès is a winner of the 2019 Community Engaged Learning (CEL) award for her course, Assessing the Broader Impact of Business.
The CEL awards are given out by the Experiential Learning team at Western University’s Student Success Centre. The purpose of the program is to support faculty in creating opportunities for students to bridge their academic studies with community engagement.
Students in Arjaliès’ course learn how to assess the impact of businesses, not only in terms of profitability but societal and environmental impact as well. To enhance their learning, students get hands-on experience working with local partners who want to assess their business impact. To date, students have worked with farmers, Syrian refugee programs, social enterprises, investment funds and Indigenous reserves, to name a few.
Funds from the award will go towards supporting student projects and arranging transportation to partner locations.
This is the second award received for Assessing the Broader Impact of Business. Last year, Arjaliès received the Page Prize, an award given out each year by the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. The Page Prize recognizes educators with well-designed, innovative courses relevant to sustainability topics.
