Michael commenced his business career with a major Canadian investment dealer becoming Vice-President, Corporate Finance - Western Canada. In 1978, he co-founded an oil and gas exploration company, Northstar Energy Corporation. Northstar was taken over by US based Devon Energy Corporation in 1998 for approximately $600 million.
In 1992, Michael initiated Northstar's corporate thrust into electrical cogeneration, developing a 110 megawatt $250 million natural-gas fired Canadian cogeneration plant and 215 megawatts for Freeport MacNamara in Indonesia.
Michael has had significant experience in the oil and gas service sector; Chairman of TSE listed Taro Industries (acquired by Weatherford International), & former Vice-Chairman of NYSE-listed Precision Drilling Inc.
Michael was instrumental in developing Bonavista Petroleum from a $5mil. Calgary based natural gas exploration company in 1997 to its current $3 billion enterprise. Michael sits on the Boards of five significant energy companies, ARC Energy Trust, Bonavista Energy, Devon Energy, North American Oil Sands Corporation and Transalta Corporation, Canada's largest publicly traded electrical generator.
Michael is a former Director of the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, Vice-Chairman of the Alberta Children's Hospital, past Alberta Chairman of the Young Presidents' Organization and sits on the Advisory Board of Canada's pre-eminent Ivey Business School.
