Ivey Professor George Athanassakos looked at recent stock market trends in his article for The Globe and Mail to try and answer the burning question: Should we fear a recession?

In what Athanassakos referred to as the “paradox” of our financial state, he pointed out that, even if the economy ends up in fair shape, that won’t necessarily be the case for the stock market.

Athanassakos said there is no concrete indication that the economy is facing a recession, but interest rates are soon to be on the rise.

“Low interest rates have supported the stock market for the last five years, but rising rates will act as a drag,” he said.
