Canadian travellers face extra passenger fees from some airlines in new year

Starting January 5, 2016, certain airlines will be upping prices for Canadian travellers. WestJet plans to add a $25-fee for the first bag on international flights, and Sunwing will stop providing free meals and drinks on its domestic and U.S. flights.

Unfortunately for frequent flyers, these additional costs for food, baggage and other services have become common in the airline industry. It all comes down to what everybody else is doing, said Professor Mark Vandenbosch, Associate Dean, Programs.

“If everyone is charging a baggage fee then we can all be angry about it, but we can all be angry together,” he said in an interview with Global News. “If demand falls, you probably will see a reduction in ticket prices, but likely not these [additional] fees.”
