Ray Tanguay and Steve Orsini join the Lawrence Centre Advisory Council

LONDON, ON – November 19, 2014 – Today Dean Robert Kennedy of the Ivey Business School welcomed Ray Tanguay (Chairman, Toyota Canadian Operations) and Steve Orsini (Secretary to Cabinet and head of the Ontario Public Service) to the Advisory Council of Ivey’s Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management.  Mr. Tanguay assumes the role of chair of the Council left vacant by newly elected Alberta Premier Jim Prentice and Mr. Orsini replaces Giles Gherson who was recently appointed Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure.

“The addition of these two leaders to the Lawrence Centre Advisory Council exemplifies the mission of the Centre: to bridge the gap between private and public sectors to the benefit of the Canadian economy and society” said Dean Kennedy.  “We are honoured that leaders of this stature have agreed to help advise the Lawrence Centre.”

Mr. Tanguay and Mr. Orsini are joining the Lawrence Centre as the organization is working on implementing recommendations made in its recently released report the Future of Canadian Manufacturing: Learning from Leading Firms. The Lawrence Centre will bring together business, educational institutions and governments to help more Ontario firms become successful in international markets by facilitating business mentorships, encouraging greater use of educational partnerships and improving governments’ collaboration on investment attraction.

“We also want to express our deep appreciation to Jim Prentice and Giles Gherson, who contributed a great deal to setting the direction of the Centre” said Kennedy.  “We wish them both well in the new and challenging responsibilities they have taken on.”

Ray Tanguay joined Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in 1991. He is recognized as a leader in instilling innovation within the organization. Under his stewardship, TMMC has been recognized with 12 J.D. Power and Associates plant quality awards, more than any other plant in North or South America. These include global best Platinum Awards in 2011 and 2014.  In 2003, TMMC became the first Toyota manufacturing plant outside of Japan to produce Lexus vehicles.  In 2014, TMMC began building the RX450h, the hybrid version of the popular Lexus vehicle.

An admirer of the Lexus slogan, the "Passionate Pursuit of Perfection", Mr. Tanguay firmly believes in people aiming to the best they can in their field. Always looking to the future, he was asked by Toyota Motor Corporation President, Akio Toyoda to craft the company’s Global Vision providing a framework for a sustainable future.

In addition to his Canadian responsibilities as Chairman of both TMMC and Toyota Canada Inc., and as President of Canadian Autoparts Toyota Inc., Mr. Tanguay continues to provide a valuable contribution to the Global Toyota in his role as advisor to the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan.

Mr. Tanguay enjoys spending time with his wife, Marge, and with his children and grandchildren. He also continues to be a boat, motorcycle and snowmobile enthusiast and a long-time Montréal Canadiens hockey fan.  In 2012, he was recognized for his achievements with an honorary Doctorate of Laws from Laurier University and an honorary Doctorate of Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

 

Steve Orsini

Secretary of Cabinet and Head of the Ontario Public Service

Steve Orsini was named Secretary of the Cabinet, Head of the Ontario Public Service and Clerk of the Executive Council effective July 9, 2014.

Orsini previously served as Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary of the Treasury Board. Prior to taking on this role in 2011, his OPS executive leadership positions have included Deputy Minister of Revenue as well as Associate Deputy Minister, Office of Taxation, Agencies and Pensions in the Ministry of Finance.

Orsini played a leadership role in supporting the government's tax, benefits and pension reform agenda over the past few years. Prior to returning to the Ministry of Finance in 2005, he held a number of positions at the Ontario Hospital Association, including Vice-President of Policy and Public Affairs. 

He has extensive experience in the Ontario Public Service, having worked in the former Ministry of Treasury and Economics, the Service Sector Secretariat, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, and the Ontario Development Corporation. 

Orsini has a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Urban and Regional Planning and a Masters in Environmental Studies (Economic Development). He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course, two years of the CICA In-Depth Tax Course, and the Harvard University Health Care Leadership Program.
