Getting on the radar screen a key barrier to attracting agri-food FDI

LONDON, ON – June 16, 2016 - Canada is often not even on the radar screen of European agri-food manufacturers seeking to build North American plants – but they are strongly attracted when they learn of Canada’s many advantages. Employing Ivey’s trademark Case Method approach David Sparling and Erin Cheney’s paper Food and Industrial Biotechnology examines a number of foreign agri-food and industrial biotech investments in Canada.

“Just getting on their radar screen is a big first step with the Europeans.” said David Sparling, professor and fellow at Ivey’s Lawrence National Centre for Policy and Management. “Once they become aware of Canada, they like what they see.”

However, navigating complex government programs is another hurdle facing foreign firms. “Navigating government is difficult at the best of times, even for local firms. Although government programs are freely publicized and promoted, developing a winning application and accessing these dollars is not easy. Simplifying these programs could help the investment attraction process a lot.”

The study by Sparling and Cheney is the fifth of six studies in the Lawrence Centre’s in the Attracting Global Mandates series.
