Why did you decide to do an MBA?

After finishing my engineering degree, I always knew I wanted to pursue an MBA to combine my technical skills with a formal business education. After just under five years as a mechanical engineer in the building engineering sector, I knew that it was time to complete an Ivey MBA and pivot into a more strategic based role.

What is the most significant thing you've learned at Ivey?

The most significant thing that I have learned from my time at Ivey is becoming comfortable with ambiguity. In a case-based learning environment such as Ivey, I've had the chance to express my viewpoints within a supportive setting. This is quite a departure from my engineering background, where solutions tend to be more definitive.

What's been the most surprising aspect of the Ivey MBA journey to date?

What has truly surprised me about my experience at Ivey is the incredible supportiveness of my classmates. With our diverse backgrounds, there's a shared commitment to helping each other grasp the material and participate in all the events and activities. This level of inclusivity and collaboration has been a remarkable aspect of my time at Ivey.

Describe the role you play professionally:

In Vancouver, I worked as a professional mechanical engineer with a specific focus on reducing carbon emissions in the built environment. My role involved devising strategic plans for transitioning to alternative clean fuels and implementing heat recovery methods across various mechanical systems within buildings.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

The most challenging aspect of my job was creating the technical design to decarbonize our clients buildings. Transforming technical designs into workable solutions often resembled solving intricate puzzles. This process, while demanding, brought a sense of reward as I unraveled complex scenarios to drive sustainable change.

What is your biggest professional accomplishment?

My most significant professional achievement was establishing and leading a commercial sector within our organization. This initiative enabled us to expand our range of services and diversify our offerings for a an important market.

What books are on your bedside table AND/OR what podcast are you listing to right now?

Podcasts:

  1. 32 Thoughts: The Podcast (NHL Podcast)
  2. Armchair Anonymous

How do you manage stress (i.e. sports, exercise, meditation etc)?

During my time at Ivey, I've found effective ways to manage stress, including engaging in activities like gravel biking, watching sports like baseball and hockey, and spending quality time with friends. Additionally, my wife has been a crucial part of my support network, especially during challenging periods in the program. Before joining Ivey, I used to find relaxation and solace in mountain biking amid the breathtaking landscapes of Vancouver's mountains.
