The number of Canadians claiming to be self-employed has increased by almost 1 million over the last decade. According to StatsCan, self-employed individuals share approximately 15 per cent of the labour market in Canada.

Assistant Professor Mike Moffatt says that “The trend of self-employment is here to stay.”

Moffatt spoke with iPolitics about the growth rate of self-employment as well as the challenges that develop for government policy makers as a result of the varying economic situations for self-employed Canadians.
