Kara Sutherland

Kara Sutherland is the Chief People Officer at Dentons Canada LLP, a member of the world’s largest law firm. Kara is responsible for setting the talent strategy and leading the talent function for all Firm members, including talent acquisition, HR systems, talent advisory, and learning and development.  

Kara obtained her Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University, and has used these skills to support the professional development of lawyers and senior leaders. Kara's background as a former practicing lawyer, combined with her extensive experience in talent management, makes her uniquely qualified to understand the challenges faced by lawyers and senior professionals.  As a trusted advisor to senior leaders, her approach to executive coaching is informed by her deep industry knowledge, and her commitment to fostering growth and development in others.  Kara enjoys working with leaders to unearth, cultivate and channel their strengths, in order to drive performance, personal satisfaction, and to create positive organizational culture. 

Under Kara's leadership, Dentons Canada LLP has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers three times and has been named among Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the 13th consecutive year. She works closely with senior leadership to design and implement a talent strategy that aligns with the Firm’s mission and business goals. Kara is a forward-looking and creative leader who is passionate about fostering belonging and accountability within and across teams. 

Kara has also been an active member of the National Association for Legal Placement (NALP) for many years and was honoured to have served as a Director on NALP’s Board from 2019-2021.
