Gas consumption in British Columbia between 2008 and 2011 dropped more than it typically would because of everyday fluctuations. The reason, according to Ivey Professor Brandon Schaufele and his research partner, is the province's carbon tax.

“In general, people don’t respond a heck of a lot to gas prices,” Schaufele says. “This tax shifted the demand curve; the policy made people change their behaviour.”
