Volkswagen is facing what many are calling one of the worst reputation crises in the auto industry. And Associate Professor June Cotte says the effects will linger.

The company used software in its vehicles to determine when emissions testing was taking place. Volkswagen admitted to deceiving regulators, who determined the cars were rigged to bypass when driven to apparently burn cleaner, when emissions were in fact 10 to 40 times above Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) levels.

Volkswagen now faces billions of dollars in fines and class-action lawsuits in Canada.

Cotte spoke with Global News about the damaging effects on the Volkswagen brand.

“Do I trust their mileage estimates? Do I trust their reliability estimates?” asked Cotte. “I think these things are going to take some time. I think the price will drop tremendously.”
