Canada needs a national fintech strategy

Ivey Finance Professor Michael King argues Canada is in dire need of a national fintech strategy. In an op-ed for The Globe and Mail, King says we are witnessing regional fragmentation, with separate reports commissioned by Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver each arguing it should be the centre of fintech in Canada.

The country is well-positioned and has many of the elements required to support a vibrant financial technology sector, but King believes the federal government, specifically the Finance Minister, must play a leadership role.

"Canada’s financial sector is looking to the Minister to champion our fintech sector. As the budget states, 'The Government has an opportunity – and a responsibility – to lead the way when it comes to digital innovation.' When it comes to fintech, the time to lead is now."
