$5 Million to develop new manufacturing network

LONDON, ON – May 1, 2014 - Ivey’s cutting-edge research on revitalizing Canadian manufacturing was recognized in Budget 2014 tabled today in Queen’s Park.  The Budget allocates $5 million over 10  years for the Lawrence Centre at the Ivey Business School to establish the Trillium Advanced Manufacturing Network.  The network will support implementation of the Lawrence Centre’s recommendations to help Canadian firms become successful international competitors.

“Ivey welcomes the Province’s support for this important initiative and its recognition of the value of the Lawrence Centre’s research. Growing our economy is in everyone’s interest. The Trillium Network will contribute to that effort by bringing together firms, educational organizations and government to take concrete action to revitalize our manufacturing sector.” said Ivey Dean Bob Kennedy.

The Trillium Network will bring together business, educational institutions and governments to implement the three recommendations for immediate action flowing from the first phase of the Lawrence Centre’s Future of Canadian Manufacturing Project – Learning from Leading Firms.  To help more firms become successful in international markets, the study recommended expanding business mentorships, greater use educational partnerships and improving governments’ work on investment attraction.

“Leading firms told us that primary responsibility for revitalizing manufacturing rests with the private sector.” said Lawrence Centre Director, Professor Paul Boothe. “However, governments have a supporting role to play.  Bringing together business, educational institutions and governments to take action through the Trillium Network is one way for the Province to make a practical contribution to revitalizing our manufacturing sector.”
