How could protests in Hong Kong affect business in Asia? Ask Andreas Schotter

Sep 30, 2014

Protest -hk

MEDIA ADVISORY As tens of thousands of protesters gather in Hong Kong, the world is waiting and watching to see if the mostly peaceful protests will turn violent on live television. Ivey Business School’s Andreas Schotter, Professor of International Business, is an expert on business in Asia specializing in ways firms can adapt and evolve in an ever-changing global economy.

Having recently returned from Hong Kong, Schotter said he believes the current protests are taking on a similar feel to the Occupy movement in the United States from a couple of years ago. While the short-term impact of the protests will mean fewer Mainland Chinese shoppers in Hong Kong during Golden Week, Schotter said he thinks the unrest could accelerate a trend where business look to re-locate their regional head offices from Hong Kong to other regional centres, particularly to Singapore.

Members of the media interested in speaking with Andreas Schotter and getting his insight on the current situation in Hong Kong can contact Ivan Langrish, Senior Manager, Media Strategy at 416-203-0664 by email at ilangrish@ivey.ca to arrange an interview time.
