Donald K. Johnson, MBA '63, LLD ’07 – investment banker, philanthropist, and longtime advocate for charitable giving reform whose landmark gift made Ivey's new Toronto campus possible – has been promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, its highest level.

Governor General Louise Arbour announced the appointment on June 26, naming Johnson among just four Canadians elevated to Companion in this round, alongside actor Michael J. Fox, scientist Lewis Kay, and soccer legend Christine Sinclair.

The Governor General’s office recognized Johnson’s “transformative philanthropy and leadership” across business education, health care, and the arts. In addition to his major gifts to Ivey, leading cultural institutions, and the Donald K. Johnson Eye Institute, the announcement noted his ongoing advocacy to eliminate the capital gains tax on charitable gifts – a change he has long argued would increase donations nationwide.

From MBA student to landmark donor

Johnson's connection to Ivey spans more than six decades. Just two months before the Order of Canada announcement, the School opened the new Donald K. Johnson Centre at First Canadian Place in Toronto – a 36,000-square-foot campus in the financial district made possible by his $30-million gift, the largest individual donation in Western and Ivey's history.

“My MBA from Ivey in 1963 was the catalyst for my transition from engineering to investment banking, and it truly changed the course of my life,” Johnson said at the Centre's April 23 opening. “Any success I've had in my career, I credit to the education, experience, and friends I gained at Ivey.”

First appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2005, Johnson was promoted to Officer in 2009. He will be formally invested as a Companion at a ceremony at Rideau Hall on a date to be announced.
