On the Anthropocene: Organizing for a Better World with Feminist New Materialisms
This talk invites attendees to think through what it means to produce knowledge for a better world. As a feminist scholar in organizational and sustainability studies, I explore how the questions feminists raise can help us to disrupt taken-for-granted assumptions that our knowledge production reproduces, such as "the illusion of the human in control"- assumptions that require disruptions if a better world is to be achieved. I portray the very difficulties of "doing otherwise," given that "thinking otherwise" is fundamentally what "legitimate knowledge" seems to curtail. The question I invite people to explore is whether studies founded on feminist new materialisms are possible if it requires us to disrupt the very notion of "the human" controlling what knowledge is legitimate. What knowledges are we leaving out? And how can we bring these knowledges in?
Marta Calas
Dr. Marta Calás is a Professor of Management at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a PhD in Organization Studies from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (1987), an MBA in Organizational Behavior from the University of California at Berkeley (1970), and a BBA from the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (1966). With over four decades of experience in academia, Dr. Calás has made significant contributions to the field of organization studies, particularly in gender and diversity, globalization, and sustainability. She has held academic appointments at leading institutions, including the University of Puerto Rico (1972-1985), where she served as Acting Dean of the College of Business Administration and Assistant Dean for External Program Development. In addition to her role at UMass, Dr. Calás has been a visiting scholar at renowned international institutions, including the University of Gothenburg in Sweden (2012), Åbo Akademi University in Finland as a Fulbright Scholar (2000), and the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor (1992).
Dr. Calás’ research focuses on feminist theorizing in organization studies, critical perspectives on globalization, and contemporary social theory. She is also deeply engaged in exploring the intersections of gender, race, and class in organizational settings. Her teaching spans undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels, where she covers topics such as global economic behavior, international management, and organizational theory. Her academic leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Dean's Research Excellence Award at the Isenberg School of Management (2010) and the Sage Award for Distinguished Scholarly Contribution from the GDO Division of the Academy of Management (2006). Dr. Calás is also actively engaged in research and public service projects, such as her Public Service Endowment Grant from the University of Massachusetts, which supports her work on extending capabilities in the emerging cycling service industry. As a thought leader in the fields of gender studies, critical theory, and organizational behavior, Dr. Calás continues to influence both academic scholarship and practical applications in the world of management and beyond.
