The recent surge in physical inactivity has prompted the World Health Organization to label it a critical global health crisis.
Only 20 per cent of Canadian adults are getting enough physical activity a week (150 minutes set by Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines). Brianne Bruijns, a Rehabilitation Sciences Master’s student at Western University, wrote a blog for the Ivey International Centre for Health Innovation on the importance of proper exercise.
"Exercise has proven to be as effective as medication for treating depression, diabetes prevention, and the secondary treatment of cardiovascular disease, suggesting you really do get bang for your buck if you pound the pavement a few times per week," she writes.
